The Kiwi Bacon factory was a smallgoods factory in the Auckland suburb of Kingsland. The large fibreglass Kiwi and neon sign on the roof of the building was an urban landmark dating from around 1960. I was inspired by Joel Meyerowitz's St Louis Arch pictures, and enjoyed the rather faded glory of this strange example of the commercialisation of New Zealand's national bird. By the time I took these pictures, the turntable that originally rotated the Kiwi had been out of order for many years, and the neon was turned on unpredictably. Exhibited at Real Pictures in 1988, numbers #1 and #7 are included in the permanent collection of Auckland Art Gallery. Note that the edition (of 10) of Kiwi Bacon #7 is sold out.
